Document Creation/Publication
Online Research
- Knowledge Forum
This is the commercial product that resulted from the CSILE project.
- Archived
information about CSILE
from the USDOE. We blew this one, fellow educators. Try Googling
"CSILE" and ask yourself why you never heard of it.
eCommunications
and Virtual Collaboration
- Center for Digital Storytelling
site. If you aren't using this strategy
to promote the writing of personal narratives in your district, shame
on you!
- Examples
of Digital Storytelling by real kids in Scott County, Kentucky.
- Comic book on producing "This
American Life" style radio documentaries. Read it carefully before
using. I think someone says, "hell."
- Audacity is a free,
open-source audio editor.
- Tapped-In
I forgot to mention this, but it is a cool virtual communications environment
from SRI.

Problem
Solving and Data Analysis
- Fathom
A data visualization tool from the people who brought you Geometer's
Sketchpad
- IMMEX - Unfortunately, they
are closed until next November as they bring up the next version.
Worth waiting for.
Simulations
and Modeling
- Muzzy Lane
Software has developed a simulation engine for education. They are
licensing the engine for geeky academics who want to make their own games
as well as creating finished games for sale.
- Railroad
Tycoon (Mac)
(PC) and Civilization
IV (PC) (Mac) are two games that have rich
content and could be used in academic settings.
- STELLA. This is an amazing modeling program that can be used to create
models for students to "play in" as well as to allow students to build
their own models to encourage systems thinking. Shame on us again if
this one disappears!
Data Collection
and Probeware
- Survey Monkey and Zoomerang are two online survey tools that classes
or individual students can use to collect real survey data. Limited
use can be made for free. Licenses are relatively inexpensive.
- Vernier is one company that makes educational probes for science.
If you can stick a probe in it, they'll get data out of it!

Technology Construction Tools
- Lego Mindstorms
It's kind of expensive but the interface for programming these robotic
devices is great. We've seen it used with students as young as second
grade!
- Squeak!
Rich, open-source version of the SmallTalk programming language that
was created to allow kids to create and manipulate multi-media objects.
Requires the participation of someone who's about a 7 on the geekiness
scale.
- Croquet
In case Squeak is not enough for you, Croquet allows you to create
share virtual worlds with Squeak and pilot around them as an avatar.
Just watch this demo
video to see where online experiences are headed!
- Robot
Odyssey in Java - DroidQuest I talked about this great freebie
in the session. The Java port is what you want. TAKE THE TIME TO
LEARN IT! It is a great tool for teaching heuristic problem solving
to kids.
