Case Study: enGauge

Schools face tremendous challenges in preparing students to live, learn, and work successfully in today's knowledge-based, digital society. Meeting those challenges demands that schools transform themselves into high-performance learning organizations. But how can this be accomplished?

Metiri Group and the North Central Regional Education Laboratory (NCREL) have worked together to build enGauge, a free, web-based framework and associated resources and assessment tools that helps schools use technology effectively to meet the learning needs of their students. enGauge identifies Six Essential Conditions that are critical to the effective uses of technology for student learning.

High-Performance School System

The EnGauge Web site has three major components:

  • A framework for understanding the system-wide factors that influence the effective use of educational technology.

  • An online assessment tool that districts and schools can use to measure system-wide effectiveness. Online surveys and offline assessment instruments translate the Six Essential Conditions into measures of effectiveness.

  • A menu of "high impact" technology-based resources matched to a school's and/or individual's profile.

For the full framework, visit the enGauge Web site at: http://www.ncrel.org/engauge/

We continue to build additional components to enGauge, to use this framework as the basis of our engagements with schools and other educational organizations, and to speak and consult on issues related to enGauge. Metiri Group welcomes the opportunity to assist with the application of these resources in your community, and to help design professional development and school improvement processes built around enGauge.

Examples of school and district based application of enGauge and other frameworks by Metiri Group principals include the following:
