| Geometer Sketchpad
Description: Initially developed
specifically for geometry exploration and modeling, students can also
use Sketchpad to explore algebra, trigonometry, calculus, art, and science.
Students draw an object in Sketchpad, then are able to explore that object's
mathematical properties by dragging it with the mouse. Geometric relationships
are preserved, allowing students to examine an entire set of similar cases
in a matter of seconds. In this way, Sketchpad encourages a process of
discovery in which students visualize and analyze a problem, then make
conjectures and attempt a proof.
Sketchpad can be used in a variety of classroom settings and with a variety
of technologies. It can be used with an overhead projector, with one or
two computers, or in a computer lab. Students can also use it for independent
exploration and homework assignments. In addition, they can pose questions
and present findings directly, or collaborate to solve problems. Finally,
Sketchpad's multimedia capabilities encourage curiosity and enhance creative
student presentations of work.
