Goals & Metrics

for Effective Classroom Technology Use

"We did not find a single case in the literature where student learning increased but had not been a central goal"

Joyce et al, The Self-renewing School

In our large-scale studies of the impact of technology on teaching and learning, one of the primary barriers that we have found is the lack of clearly articulated goals related to kids and learning. In order for technology use to have an impact, that use must be focused on well-defined outcomes accompanied by clearly stated evidence of success.

Good goals should:

  • Be directly related to kids and learning… broadly defined
  • Paint a picture of what success will look like
  • Be specific
  • Be measurable
  • Be realistic
  • NOT be strategies
